Making the Cloud Safe for IT

On July 2nd, the Google App Engine experienced about six (6) hours of downtime in what many would defend as an inevitable reality of Cloud Computing. Even the Apps Engine Status Page was down for atleast four hours, so people looking for an update were left without a confirmation or denial of the problem.
Hosting provider Rackspace also had a massive outage right after Michael Jackson’s death - undoubtedly due to the influx of additional traffic on their customers’ sites - hey, even Google thought they were getting a denial of service attack that day. Wikipedia has an entry calling this the “Michael Jackson” effect.

This is the second of a two part series. You can read the first part HERE.
A few days ago I wrote about Web 2.0’s “Reverse Network Effect” due to the concentration of folks at the Enterprise 2.0 conference in Boston. The lack of wireless access can be truly crippling as I experienced first-hand.
Before Boston, I had just finished a two week camping/hiking/driving vacation to Alaska. The rugged state is home to the tallest mountain on the continent, the largest oilfield in North America, 24 hours of daylight (in the summer), and about 600,000 people. To give a sense of scale, Anchorage has 250,000 people with the next most populous city of Fairbanks with only 30,000 souls.

The good folks at Box.net contacted me regarding their “Box.net vs SharePoint” challenge that was kicked off at Enterprise 2.0 last week in Boston. Many will recognize box.net as one of the more mature yet fledgling “online file sharing and backup” providers, so it is good to see these types of vendors move on from just being a file repository to a more collaborative workspace.
The exciting part is that I see more and more competitors entering the workgroup space for collaboration, and on the high end, we’re starting to see real, credible Cloud-based solutions for enterprise backup (more in a future blog post). So how is the industry evolving?
A deeper look at box.net may provide some clues…

This article is part one of two in the series.
What happens when Web 2.0 technologies are so pervasive that everybody is online all the time and everywhere? At any given conference, you have people catching up on work (email), killing time (aka surfing), or working on a document. The bane of a laptop user’s existence at a conference is a) lack of wireless connectivity and b) lack of electric outlets to keep working throughout all those great sessions. The behavior of people trying to get a connection or simply some electricity is comical - until you become one of them.

I spoke to a CIO a few months ago about her thoughts on the “social networking phenomenon” in the enterprise as it is changing the issues and concerns she has to deal with in her daily job. She pointed out one interesting factoid: She neither knows, nor can find out her assistant’s Facebook account. The CIO tried and tried, but her assistant strongly refuses. The assistant maintains two profiles - one for work, and an alias for her personal life. The CIO may still be working on this, so stay tuned
